Death and Power: Saturn Devouring His Son by Francisco de Goya – Art of the Week Halloween Edition
This is one of Francisco de Goya's most famous and popular Black Paintings. Like the rest of the collection, this painting is a dark, haunting, and terrifying depiction of Goya's mind. "Saturn Devouring His Son" is rich in imagery, symbolism, and meaning that help bring to life the disturbing nature of this piece. To better understand this painting, one must have context about Greek mythology.

When I first stumbled upon this painting at the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain, I was starstruck. When my eyes locked onto Velázquez's painting, I began to tear up. This depiction of Christ was brutal, haunting, and yet incredibly beautiful. My tears were bittersweet like the painting; that's when I knew that this painting would forever be a part of me.
